Ernesto Betancourt
Biography
Ernesto Betancourt is a Mexican architect who graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and holds a Master’s degree in Urban Management from the joint UPC/UIA/Arquine program. His career combines architectural practice, urban design, public management, and architectural criticism. He has collaborated with Teodoro González de León’s Architecture Studio and with FR-EE / Fernando Romero Enterprise. He has also served as Executive Director of Projects at the Mexico City Public Space Authority and as Coordinator of Special Projects at the Secretariat of Urban Development and Housing (SEDUVI), where he participated in projects involving public space, urban infrastructure, and civic facilities. He is a professor at CENTRO and a founding member of the editorial board of Arquine, where he has published numerous columns and essays addressing the city, housing, urban policy, and contemporary architecture. His work lies at the intersection of architectural practice, urbanism, and public policy, with a particular interest in the transformation of urban space and critical discourse surrounding the contemporary city. Betancourt is also the uncle of Mexican filmmaker Alonso Betancourt Cherbowsky. Throughout Alonso’s development as a filmmaker, Ernesto has served as an important mentor, sharing his knowledge and perspective on cinema, architecture, visual language, and the ways in which creative disciplines can inform one another. His influence has extended beyond professional guidance into Alonso’s personal and artistic development. Ernesto also makes a small acting appearance in Alonso Betancourt Cherbowsky’s feature-film directorial debut, Abeja Voladora (Flying Bee), marking his participation in the filmmaker’s first feature as both a personal and creative connection.
